Originally from Berkeley, California but based in New York City for the last 30 years,
tenor saxophonist/pianist/composer Jessica Jones has worked with Joseph Jarman, Cecil Taylor,Don Cherry, and Peter Apfelbaum as well as a variety of Haitian, Caribbean, and African bands. The primary outlet for her compositions for the past 20 years has been the Jessica Jones Quartet, a pianoless quartet which has several recordings out and has played many US festivals. In addition to working and recording with the Jessica Jones Quartet, Ms. Jones is active as a sideman. She is an innovative jazz educator and consultant, working with children on improvisation, composition, and oral traditions for Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Camp for Female Instrumentalists (Pretoria, South Africa), Stanford Jazz Workshop, the Vision Festival, and others. She currently teaches middle and high school jazz bands at Brooklyn Friends School in a program she founded, and works for Jazz at Lincoln Center in the middle school jazz academy and as the director of JazzGirls Day, and co-directs the Visionary Youth Orchestra, an improvising/free-jazz ensemble for middle and high schoolers. In addition, she has worked each summer at Cazadero Music Camp for the past 30+ years.
